Still working out what to add here.
Sluice Setup
I was looking for something to do during the summer after recently becoming single at the time. A co-worker friend started telling me about this gold prospecting stuff. I was curious and began my research on the subject.
I was reading about prospecting claims and began wondering where I could go prospecting? I saw this gold prospecting group called the GPAA (Gold Prospectors Association of America) and since I didn't want to break any laws digging on someone else's claim, I signed up.
I tried finding gold my first year on a couple GPAA claims, but I was not doing very well. I set my sluice up making sure there was a 1" drop for every 12" of sluice, but I wasn't finding much (hint: there is more to setting up your sluice than 1" for every foot of sluice). One day, I just so happen to stop by the Bear River while driving home from a prospecting trip and met another prospector, Gary, who was nice enough to help me learn the ropes. The next weekend I showed up at the Bear River in Colfax, CA where Gary explained how to efficiently set up my sluice and offered more pointers... many more pointers. After that I started finding gold and that's when I was bit by the bug... the gold bug. Now I'm a member not only with the GPAA but I signed up with the LDMA (Lost Dutchman's Mining Association), and the Mother Lode Goldhounds in Auburn, CA.
I've been enjoying this hobby since 2013. I have helped a few friends and co-workers interested in learning about prospecting. I try to always remain open-minded and help others who are starting out... I guess it's my way of paying it forward. But I'm not a geologist and I don't do this for a living. I do this simply for the enjoyment of being outdoors in the peaceful and serene environment and the excitement of seeing color in my sluice box's cheater mat and in the pan.
As much as I enjoy prospecting and being outdoors, I have also found an interest in creating videos and taking pictures. Now I try to combine these hobbies so others can enjoy what I see or do when prospecting and maybe I can get someone new interested or even learn something about prospecting. I always enjoy meeting others and I think we become better when we learn from each other... after all, I'm still learning all the time.
